Resetting my UCalgaryBlogs space

Cody is doing great work in rebooting the UCalgaryBlogs.ca service, which started maybe 15 years ago in another form, them transitioned over time into a shared WordPress Multiuser (then WordPress Multisite) instance that accumulated a lot of kruft over the years. Plugins were added because instructors needed to do a thing. Themes were added because sites needed to look just right. This sandbox blog space had over 180 posts, since 2007. 90% were aggregated from my main blog’s RSS feed. The other 10% were “So… does this plugin work, and if so what does it look like” posts. So I just deleted them all, to start fresh.

I will say – boy, howdy has WordPress gotten better over the years. Functionality that required separate plugins (ref. the unmaintainable list of questionable plugins that were deleted as part of the reboot process) or themes (ditto) can now be done within the editor as blocks. It’s not Gutenberg. Or is it? Or was it based on Gutenberg? I don’t know. But this seems to work so much better.

I don’t know what I’ll post here that I wouldn’t post on my main blog instead… Which I rarely do now anyway…

I wonder if we (meaning Cody *cough*) can build a block to embed YuJa videos… Or does YuJa work via OEmbed natively? Let’s try…

So… nope. WordPress OEmbed doesn’t like YuJa direct URLs. Maybe if I paste the normal embed html code? Nope. Same thing. OK – some work to do…

https://yuja.ucalgary.ca/V/Video?v=849906&node=4141320&a=33691537&autoplay=1

It did let me offer to convert the YuJa direct URL to a link, so I guess it fails somewhat gracefully.

But – I was able to publish that screenshot just by pasting the screenshot-to-clipboard without having to save/convert/upload, so that’s handy…

And it looks like I’ll be blogging about blogging here. Problem solved.
